This page shows the photo's I have entered for competitions. To date these have all been entered in the projected image section at Maidenhead Camera Club.

This photo was the very first that I have ever entered in a competition (September '08). It scored a maximum 20 points in the "development" class. I was amazed to get such a good score. It was taken in the area around Canary Wharf in London during July 2008 using my Canon EOS400D with Sigma 10-20mm lens at F10, 10mm and 1/125s.

The next photo was entered at the same time as the one above and was somewhat less successful. I was not going to put on a border but did at the last moment and this cost me points (2 or 3 I reckon). It only scored 14. I quite like the picture itself although the judge felt there were too many stray blades of grass etc. that were a distraction. It was taken at Bray Lake near Maidenhead during summer 2007 using a Canon EOS300D with Sigma 24-70mm lens at F2.8, 70mm and 1/1250s.

The next photo was entered 28th October 2008. It scored 16. The judge like the lighting but felt the person was in the wrong position in the photo. Fair comment as I hadn't even noticed them when I took it! It was taken near Canary Wharf in London during July 2008 using my Canon EOS400D and Sigma 10-20mm lens at F7.1, 10mm and 1/60s.

The next photo was also entered 28th October 2008. I was a bit concerned about what the judge would make of this as it is obviously heavily modified. In the event it scored 17 which was a bit of a relief!. The judges comments were mainly about the use of the wide angle lens. The car is the short lived MG SV super car produced by MG-Rover in its last months. It was taken  at the MG Car Club Silverstone meeting in June 2008 using my Canon EOS400D with Sigma 10-20mm lens at F14, 10mm and 1/160s. This picture also made an appearance (in printed form) in the small photo gallery area at the Maidenhead branch of Sainsbury's.

The next photo was again taken November 2008 and entered for competition on 20th January 2009. It was taken from Hayle beach (Cornwall) looking towards Godrevy Lighthouse. This picture received some very positive comments from the judge and a score of 17. It was taken with my Canon EOS400D with Sigma 24-70mm lens at F11, 60mm and 1/200s.

This photo was taken at the Great Western Society center at Didcot in April 2007 and entered for  competition on 20th January 2009. The background is completely over-exposed and cost some points in the scoring. Other than that problem the judge made generally favourable comments about it. The original was very under-exposed so to retrieve the situation to the produce a reasonable picture was quite satisfying. The picture scored 16. It was taken with my Canon EOS300D with Sigma 24-70mm lens at F2.8, 70mm and 1/60s.

This photo was taken at Nanjizal in Cornwall looking out to sea. The colours and lighting are natural. I feel the presence of the ships on the horizon add a lot to what would otherwise be a less interesting sunset. The judge felt I should have cropped more off the bottom of the picture. This was a bit irritating as I had done exactly that to the version I originally intended to submit! In the event it scored 18 which was still pretty good. It was taken in November 2008 with my Canon EOS400D with Sigma 24-70mm lens at ISO 200, F5, 70mm and 1/800s. It was entered for competition on 17th February 2009.

This photo was taken at Lago Di Ledro near Lake Garda in northern Italy. The judge commented that the middle section needed something in it to add interest which I have to agree with. It scored 16. The photo was taken in July 2008 with my Canon EOS400D with Sigma 10-20mm lens at F11, 18mm and 1/125s. It was entered for competition on 17th February 2009.

This photo was taken looking from Vauxhall Bridge in London towards the London Eye. I really like the sunset reflections on the (Shell?) building to the left of the Eye and the relatively unusual view of the Eye itself all helped by the striking sunset colours. I had quite high hopes of this picture but the judge on the night was handing out some quite low scores so in the end I was pleased to get 18. He made several complimentary comments about the picture. It was taken in January 2009 with my Canon EOS400D with Sigma 18-200mm lens at ISO 400, F10, 154mm and 1/320s. It was entered for competition on 7th April 2009.

This photo of teazals was taken at Bray Lake near Maidenhead in March 2009. The intention was get the shot at an unusual viewpoint. I did some selective blurring and cropping of the original to improve the composition and converted it to mono. It was a bit of a last minute selection for the competition and I did not have any great expectations of a high score. However, the judge made lots of really nice comments about it including "perfect composition" and scored it as a 20! I was delighted and surprised. It just goes to show that you simply can not anticipate what any given judge will like. It was taken with my Canon EOS400D with Sigma 18-200mm lens at ISO 200, F8, 18mm and 1/500s. It was entered for competition on 7th April 2009.

The Next Sets of Photo's were entered in "themed" competitions.

The next photo was taken in November 2008 and entered for a Natural History competition on 6th January 2009. It was taken in St.Ives harbour. The background is not quite out of focus enough and this was picked up by the judge. This picture only scored 16. It was taken with my Canon EOS400D with Sigma 24-70mm lens at F5, 50mm and 1/160s.

The next photo was taken in May 2008 and entered for a Natural History competition on 6th January 2009. I felt it was quite a nice pic of this cute little chap having a bit of lunch and the audience at the club found it amusing when it came up on the screen. Unfortunately, the judge specialised in Natural History and picked fault in several photo's for not showing the whole animal. I don't really think that is required in all cases and he still gave the picture 17. It was taken with my Canon EOS400D with Sigma 170-500mm lens at F5.6, 328mm and 1/160s.

The next photo was taken in July 2008 at Garda on Lake Garda and entered for a Monochrome competition on 3rd March 2009. I like the perspective in this photo which was achieved with a wide angle lens. Again, the judge like the photo but pointed out that a section of the wall that the handrail is on is just burnt out. She scored it as 18. It was taken with my Canon EOS400D with Sigma 10-20mm lens at ISO200 (heaven knows why!), F10, 10mm and 1/640s.

The next photo was also entered for the Monochrome competition on 3rd March 2009. It was taken near the Canary Wharf tube station. Again I tried to use a wide angle to create a dramatic view but it has not worked as well as the previous picture. I also tried to get a high level of contrast between light and dark in the mono conversion. However, I wsa sloppy with this and went way too dark in a couple of areas and this was immediately picked up (and scored down) by the judge. She gave it 16.  It was taken with my Canon EOS400D with Sigma 10-20mm lens at F22, 10mm and 1/60s.
